Night of Joy

Saw you walk past with your friends
Something in me said keep starring
Hoping you would stare back
You looked like a modern African queen
How I wanted to hold you tight like that white vest you wore
How I wanted to stand by you like the red shoes you wore so elegantly
I let you walk past without uttering any word of greeting
Saw you on the dance floor
I felt my heart dance for life
I stole a look as you stood beside me
You were so close I could smell you yet I feared to introduce myself
I literally rubbed myself against you, hoping you would feel the discomfort
You said no word; perhaps you found comfort in my skin
Finally plucked up the strength to ask for one dance
You obeyed my request, you revealed the dancer in me
I held you and caressed you as our bodies spoke the same language
Your skin was soft as that of an infant
Your eyes spoke a language foreign yet I could follow
Didn’t want to let go, how I wanted to dance the night away with you in my arms
As the night ended, reality struck that perhaps you belong to another being
Perhaps that as the night ends, so will your memories of the magical dance we shared
The reality was that you indeed belonged to another being
As I danced away with you, she stood behind us, watching every move we make
Probably bragging within her that she owns a being desperately sought
Did she also see how we connected?
Did she understand the language spoken with our eyes?
Yet reality remains, you belong to her...
